Built by Burrell for their own use.

She was sold in 1876 to a grain merchant, David Murison, in Montrose no doubt to satisfy the demand for the carriage of his barley from Angus to the distilleries on Islay and elsewhere on the west coast. J&J Hay were also big in this trade as the puffers proved ideal for carrying it via the Forth and Clyde canal.

"Retriever" was lost on 12th May 1889 when she stranded near Fife Ness while on passage from Methil to Montrose.
