Built for a George MacFarlane of Glasgow, Bruce capsized
and sank off Irvine in 1882 when her cargo of manganese waste
shifted. Contemporary reports say that only her skipper,
a Richard Burrows, survived.
She was salvaged and returned to use in 1885 by James and
John Glover of Paisley under the name "Gleniffer", replacing
their earlier vessel of the same
name. In 1892 she came
into the ownership of Malcolm Campbell of Glasgow.
