Built for Edward Ferguson of Greenock, Ben Nevis was in the ownership of J.Campbell of Greenock when she was lost on 5th April 1887.

She was on passage from Glasgow to the Caledonian Canal with a cargo of coal when she foundered  on 5th April 1887 near Pladda in the Firth of Clyde. Her crew of four were all lost.   This location suggests that she was routing via the Mull of Kintyre - a strange route for a small steam ligher at that time of year.
